The San Francisco 49ers have had a number of changes to the roster this offseason, both on offense and on defense.
After a disappointing 6-11 season and a last place finish in the NFC West in 2024, general manager John Lynch is working diligently to improve things for 2025. One of the biggest question marks about the future is quarterback Brock Purdy.
The former Iowa State Cyclone and last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft is entering the final season of his rookie contract and awaiting a new deal.
Lynch and team owner Jed York have publicly displayed support for Purdy and his future role with the 49ers. But recent comments about a new quarterback in town has some scratching their heads.
San Francisco offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak praised new backup Mac Jones and cited his “traits for a starting quarterback” in a recent interview with reporters.
“Mac’s a really good thrower,” Kubiak said, 49ers WebZone shared. “He stands in the pocket, he’s a strong guy and he’s really smart. And so, he’s got a lot of traits that we like for a starting quarterback, and his career has kind of gone up and down a little bit the past couple years, but we saw the same things in Jacksonville that we loved about him as a college prospect, and that really excites us.”
Speculation in San Francisco has long been that coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to draft Jones in 2021, but the team instead used the No. 3 pick to take Trey Lance, who is now out of the league after stints with the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
Purdy and the team have yet to come to terms on a contract extension for beyond 2025. And it sounds like at least Kubiak might be ok moving forward without him.
