Grandal gained the ability to opt out of his minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, but instead plans to stay put at Triple-A Worcester, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
Cotillo’s report offered some useful insight, as it stated the veteran catcher hopes to get more at-bats over the next couple of weeks after only appearing in seven games since signing with the organization in mid-April. Grandal reportedly drew interest from other teams, but has comfort where he currently is and believes the club will grant his release if he requests it.
Boston once looked like it would be scrambling to promote Grandal, as they signed him almost immediately after starting catcher Connor Wong suffered a pinky fracture on April 7. Carlos Narvaez has held down the fort since that injury, however, the former starter looks primed to make his return to the active roster at some point over the coming week.
The Red Sox seemingly survived the injury, but it still must be nice to know that the two-time All-Star is still in the system.
