The San Francisco 49ers just locked up one of their locker room leaders and best offensive players for years to come.

Star tight end George Kittle signed a four-year contract extension that will get him north of $70 million in total, including $40 million guaranteed.

Now, according to a report by Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, GM John Lynch is inching closer to getting a deal done with Brock Purdy as well.

Per Meirov’s report, the deal will get the former Mr. Irrelevant $50 million a year.

This is a somewhat surprising turn of events.

The Niners’ front office and higher-ups have repeatedly talked about their commitment to Purdy and their desire to keep him there for the long run.

Nevertheless, the fact that they will agree to give him $50 million a season is somewhat shocking, all things considered.

As things stand now, the Niners could essentially keep Purdy under team control for the next three years by just placing him under the franchise tag, and they would have to pay him significantly less money.

That would also be easier on their salary cap constraints.

Then again, it seems like the Niners have seen more than enough from their young signal-caller, and they want to keep him there for the long run and do right by him after getting him on one of the best value deals for the past two years or so.

Purdy’s numbers don’t lie, but the eye test has raised some concerns, and only time will tell how this decision will turn out.
