Red Sox Announce Exciting News Before Blue Jays Game

The Boston Red Sox have started the 2025 MLB season with a 16-14 record through their first 30 games. This is good for second place in the American League East, trailing the New York Yankees by 1.5 games. Entering a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, Boston is looking to stay in good form. Riding a modest two-game winning streak, the Red Rox have won six of their last 10 games. It has been a different story for the Blue Jays recently, as they have lost seven of their last 10. Boston also announced some exciting news ahead of this series.

Per MLB’s official transactions page, the Red Sox announced that right-handed hitting catcher Connor Wong had begun a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester. Wong has been on the injured list with a left fifth finger fracture he sustained earlier this month.

Wong had a breakout season in 2024, recording a career-high 110 OPS+ while driving in 52 runs. He started slowly his season, tallying just two hits in his first 23 at-bats, but the 28-year-old is someone Boston expects to be a consistent contributor. Wong went 2-for-4 and drove in one run in his first rehab game. Connor Wong went 2-4 in his first rehab start with Worcester, including a 104.5 mph RBI single.

Good to see him back in action. Grandal (.313/.450/.688 thru 5 games) will catch game 2. : @TailsAustin9922pic.twitter.com/afRsGB85YX — G.G. (@ggeiss_mlb) April 27, 2025 In Wong’s absence, the Red Sox have enjoyed solid production from rookie catcher Carlos Narvaez. The 26-year-old has posted just a 79 OPS+ in 70 at-bats, but rates as an elite defensive catcher. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Narvaez’s defense will earn him playing time even when Wong is activated (via Christopher Smith of MassLive).
