Mets' Carlos Mendoza Sends Message After Calls Mount for Roster Move

The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins on Monday and Tuesday, but couldn’t complete the sweep on Wednesday, losing 5-0 after almost getting no-hit.

Marlins (6-6) starting pitcher Max Meyer (1-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and the Mets (8-4) hit just two balls out of the infield all game. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso each had one hit, while the latter star also walked.

Meanwhile, New York starter Tylor Megill (2-1) earned the loss after giving up two runs in four innings. Southpaw Danny Young gave up the other three runs in the ninth.

While the Mets are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies atop the NL East, their roster is still a work in progress. Infielder Brett Baty especially has room to improve, as he’s hitting just .111 in 27 at-bats.

Some Mets fans aren’t pleased.

“Brett Baty is legit unwatchable,” SI’s Jake Brown said.

“Get Brett Baty off this team,” Barstool’s Frank Fleming said.

“I feel bad for Brett Baty at this point,” another person said.

New York manager Carlos Mendoza sounded off about the 25-year-old after Wednesday’s game, via SNY.

“He will continue to work hard,” he said. “We will continue to support him. We will continue to give him opportunities. He’s got to fight through it.”

Baty went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Wednesday.

Baty has struggled throughout his career, as his best-ever slash line was .229/.309/.327 in 2024. He also notched a career-high nine homers and 34 RBI in 108 games the season before.

The Mets will now travel to face the Athletics in Sacramento on Friday, which will begin a three-game set. After that, they’ll play the Minnesota Twins before hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and Phillies (7-3).

Right-hander Griffen Canning (0-1) will pitch on Friday.
