Braves wrap up spring training with 4-2 loss to Cubs

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Braves fans got one final spring training look at the team before the regular season starts on Thursday.

The Braves lost to the Chicago Cubs 4-2 after Cubs first baseman Haydn McGeary took Braves pitcher Shay Schanaman deep in the bottom of the eighth inning.

New face on the mound

The Braves acquired left-hander José Suarez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Ian Anderson Monday. Suarez made the short, 15-minute trip from the Angels’ spring training complex in Tempe, Arizona, to the Cubs’ complex in Mesa, Arizona, to join the team.

Suarez gave up one run on two hits in one inning of work before being relieved by Zach Thompson.

De La Cruz homers

Bryan De La Cruz might not be the most famous baseball player with his last name, but he showed some pop Tuesday. He took a breaking ball deep to left for his first home run of the spring.

De La Cruz went 1-3 to end spring training with a .304 batting average. He remains on the active roster and could function as a plug-and-play outfielder.

Starters disappoint

The Braves got six hits on the day, but only three came from the expected starting lineup. Austin Riley, Marcell Ozuna and Ozzie Albies all had hits, while Matt Olson and Jurickson Profar wrapped up mediocre springs with with no hits between them Tuesday.

Thursday’s season opener in San Diego will air across multiple Gray Media television stations.
