Brian Cashman Hints at Unexpected Yankees Roster Move

If New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman gets his way, the Bronx Bombers may have reinforcements coming. Yankees fans still shouldn’t expect a blockbuster trade ahead of next Thursday’s opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. For the most part, the Yankees are staying in-house to fill an injury-decimated roster, one that already lost ace Gerrit Cole to season-ending elbow surgery and remains without other major contributors.

However, that doesn’t mean the Yankees oppose any external move. Speaking with the media Saturday, Cashman said he would be “happier” if the Yankees added a right-handed bat. Cashman also told reporters the Yankees are “keeping the phone lines open,” according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.

Given the lack of spring additions, we’d be surprised if the Yankees brought a new face. The Yankees have spent most of Grapefruit League play without designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (elbows) and infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf), and both remain out indefinitely.

Various former All-Stars, including J.D. Martinez and Whit Merrifield, remain unsigned. The Yankees were never credibly linked to ex-New York Mets shortstop Jose Iglesias, who joined the San Diego Padres earlier this month.

Barring a trade, backup catcher J.C. Escarra and two-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder Trent Grisham are almost certainly guaranteed roster spots. Then, there’s Pablo Reyes, who has played every position but catcher-and that includes four pitching appearances-since debuting in 2018. The 31-year-old Reyes owns a .323 average and .805 OPS over 14 preseason games.

To his credit, Cashman acquired Miami Marlins third baseman Jon Berti less than 24 hours before Opening Day last year. We’ll see if he makes a similar move in the coming days or if the Yankees’ Opening Day roster is more or less what we already expect.
