Former SF Giants second baseman Thairo Estrada got some rough injury news. The current member of the Colorado Rockies has a broken wrist after getting hit by a pitch in a spring training game and will be out four to eight weeks per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

This is unfortunate news for Estrada who was a key member of the Giants from 2021 to 2024. In 2022 and 2023 specifically, Estrada proved to be one of the better all-around players on the Giants. In those two seasons combined, he slashed .266/.319/.408 with 28 home runs and 111 RBI. He also played very solid defense at second base, but was snubbed of any Gold Glove consideration. Estrada was clearly well-liked by his teammates as well, winning the Willie Mac Award in 2023.

Unfortunately, 2024 was a rougher go for Estrada. He dealt with injuries throughout the season and when he was on the field he just was not the same. In 96 games at the big league level, he slashed .217/.247/.343 with nine home runs and 47 RBI. That poor performance resulted in him being placed on waivers at the end of August.

He found a home with Colorado in the offseason as they were willing to let him try and resurrect his career as their starting second baseman. Early spring training returns were good as he had collected 14 base hits in 35 at-bats which showed he was possibly finding his way again. There was even a funny moment between he and his former teammate Logan Webb in a Cactus League game when on the first pitch of the at-bat, Webb lost control of the pitch and accidentally threw behind Estrada which made for a good laugh between the ex-teammates.

Sadly, Estrada’s 2025 is off to a rough start before it even really began due to his broken wrist. Him getting hit by a pitch and breaking his wrist brings back bad memories of when the same thing happened in spring training of 2015 for the Giants with Hunter Pence.

One hopes this injury will not keep Estrada out of action for a full two months and that he can get back on the field and flash some of that solid play he displayed as a member of the Giants. Let’s just hope he does not make the Giants pay too much whenever he faces them once he is healthy.
