The Boston Red Sox have a problem, albeit a good problem to have. They have too much infield talent without enough spots to go around. The starting infield in Boston includes Triston Casas, Trevor Story, Rafael Devers, and Alex Bregman. But top prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer have played too well over the last year to continue their careers in Triple-A. Mayer, a shortstop, and Campbell, a shortstop/second baseman, could both crack the Red Sox’s opening day lineup if there were enough spots to go around.
With Boston expected to slide Devers to the designated hitter slot and place Bregman at third base, it clears up second base for Campbell. But Mayer had an OPS of 1.076 this spring entering Wednesday. He had an OPS of .850 in the minor leagues last year. His bat seems ready for the big leagues and his glove might be even better than his bat. How could the Red Sox clear room for Mayer and Campbell?
They could trade their $140 million shortstop, the aforementioned Story. Let me clarify: This would be a very risky and very bold move for Boston. It would require the Red Sox to believe that Campbell and Mayer are both ready to play every day in the big leagues right now. But if the Red Sox believe this, they could trade Story for another starting pitcher, potentially in a deal with the Atlanta Braves. Boston would run the risk of somebody getting hurt and struggling with depth. But if that happens, the Red Sox could slide Devers back into the infield and out of the DH slot.
It would be risky, but it could prove to be worth it. Boston would clear a lot of salary and add some talented prospects in a deal for Story.
