While the San Francisco 49ers have been slow off the blocks in the 2025 offseason, there’s still a box on their to-do list that can help alleviate some of the concerns about the direction the franchise is heading after a 6-11 season.
Still looming over this offseason is quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract negotiations, for which there hasn’t been a substantial update since general manager John Lynch spoke with reporters at the NFL combine and confirmed contract talks are happening.
“There’s no guarantees that we get something done,” Lynch said via the Athletic’s Matt Barrows. “But my experience has been when both sides are motivated, there’s ample opportunity to do so, and we’ve been able to do that.”
Part of the issue with the 49ers’ tumultuous offseason, which has seen the exits of players like cornerback Charvarius Ward, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga, is that there isn’t a publicly established direction. It looks for now like a mass exodus that precedes a rebuild while Purdy’s contract lingers as a question mark about his and the team’s future.
Getting his extension done would ease at least some of the doubts about the 49ers’ core and the potential to open a new Super Bowl window. After an offseason of not spending money, dropping a QB contract that sits somewhere near the top third of the market would help to establish that there’s something more to the 49ers’ offseason inactivity than simply punting on the 2025 season so they can spend less money in the process.
It appears the 49ers are gearing up to make sure they’re paying the right players going forward. That only makes real sense if they’re doing so with a legitimate QB contract on their ledger. The sooner they get that contract done and get themselves an offseason win, the sooner the focus can turn away from their lack of activity and toward getting back to contention.
