Facing injuries to Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil, the New York Yankees will take any good news that they can, especially after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets during the offseason. Jasson Dominguez’s struggling defense leaves them with a weakness at left field, and the pile up of injuries are affecting the reigning AL champions’ hopes of making it back to the World Series.
Luckily, the answer may not be on the free agent market with players like Nolan Arenado or Alex Verdugo, but rather in the Yankees’ own farm system. Spencer Jones, the team’s No. 3 overall prospect, flashed some serious leather in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals. SPENCER JONES GOES UP AND ROBS A HOME RUN! pic.twitter.com/VJmbLNuTA8 — Fireside Yankees (@FiresideYankees) March 9, 2025 With the game tied at five in the bottom of the 8th inning, Cardinals catcher Leonardo Bernal belted a 1-1 fastball from Harrison Cohen to deep center field, and the 6’7″ Jones leapt up for an incredible catch and home run robbery to keep the game tied.
Jones, long compared to Aaron Judge for his height and his effortless power, has been waiting for his chance at Yankee stardom for a while. Jones exceeded 200 strikeouts during the 2024 season, a number that made Yankee scouts nervous. Coming into spring training, however, Jones seemed confident in his ability to make a difference on this squad. “I feel dangerous,” Jones said during a Feb. 26 interview.
“Most of the changes I’m starting to make this season — and going back into this offseason — is when it’s time for me to swing, I want to be able to move my body as a unit,” he said on MLB Network’s 30 Clubs in 15 Days series. As a result of their years of moves to win now, the Yankees’ farm system is far from the best in baseball. However, a little boost of homegrown talent may be just what the Yankees need right now as they look to make another deep playoff run in 2025.
