What happened to Griese? That remains unclear. We may have to wait until general manager John Lynch addresses the media on Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis for more details.
Lombardi joined Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff last year. He began his NFL coaching career as an assistant with the 49ers in 2013 and has since held roles with the New York Jets (2017-2018) and New England Patriots (2019-2021). Before rejoining the 49ers as a senior offensive assistant, he served as the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2023.
Griese was with the 49ers since 2022 and was the only quarterbacks coach Brock Purdy has worked with since being drafted.
Klay Kubiak promotion made official
The 49ers have officially promoted offensive pass game specialist Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator, a move widely anticipated since January 8.
During the team’s end-of-season press conference, Shanahan prematurely announced Kubiak as his new offensive coordinator, inadvertently violating NFL rules.
The NFL requires an open search for offensive coordinator vacancies, prompting the 49ers to conduct interviews. Although Shanahan interviewed Iowa State pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Noah Pauley and Oregon co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach Junior Adams, Kubiak was always the front-runner for the job.
Shanahan entrusted Kubiak to call plays during the 49ers’ regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals, drawing praise from the head coach for his performance. While Kubiak had previously called plays during two preseason games, Shanahan has traditionally handled regular-season play-calling throughout his tenure as head coach—making the Week 18 game the only exception.
Kubiak joined the 49ers’ coaching staff in 2021 as a defensive quality control coach before transitioning to offense. He served as assistant quarterbacks coach from 2022 to 2023 and was promoted to offensive pass game specialist in 2024.
