The San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles have duked it out for conference supremacy in recent years, but the latter clearly has an advantage when it comes to finishing the job.
Earlier this month, the Eagles won their second Super Bowl in eight years. The 49ers have been to two Super Bowls in that time frame and four of the last six NFC Championships, but they’ve come up empty-handed.
As the old saying goes, don’t get mad; get even. So perhaps to strike back at the Eagles in 2025, San Francisco will nab a free agent or two from Philly’s loaded Super Bowl-winning roster.
USA Today’s Kyle Madson believes one Eagles lineman is perfectly suited for the 49ers’ needs this free-agent cycle. Madson recently named defensive tackle Milton Williams as the number-one signing San Francisco should make this winter.
“Williams is coming off a career year as a pass rusher where he posted 54 pressures and eight sacks,” Madson wrote. “He entered 2024 with 60 pressures and eight sacks in the previous three seasons combined.”
“He’s at least an adequate run defender which should make him an improvement for a shoddy 49ers defensive tackle rotation. Williams can’t be their only fix on the defensive line, but he’d be a nice fit in a group that badly needs depth.”
Williams will only be 26 next season, and he’s had a productive four-year career to this point, with 11.5 sacks and 29 quarterback hits in the regular season. In the Super Bowl, he put up a pair of sacks, including a strip sack in the fourth quarter to put the stamp on a 40-22 victory.
Spotrac currently projects Williams for a three-year, $36 million contract, which the 49ers should be able to finagle into their payroll even after a lucrative extension for quarterback Brock Purdy.
If San Francisco wants to kill two birds with one stone, they can improve in the trenches while potentially weakening a top conference rival.
