According to ESPN, the Chargers are expected to release Joey Bosa soon, which points to a possible reunion with his brother, Nick Bosa.
The thought of playing together on the same team has certainly crossed the minds of star pass-rushers Nick Bosa and Joey Bosa.
Until now, both players have been content letting their respective careers play out, Nick Bosa with the San Francisco 49ers and Joey Bosa with the Los Angeles Chargers.
However, there’s been a growing buzz suggesting the Bolts are preparing to move on from the elder Bosa this offseason.
And that buzz received an additional jolt from one well-connected ESPN insider.
Report suggests Chargers will release Joey Bosa soon
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, L.A. is expected to release Bosa between now and next month when he’s scheduled to receive a $12-plus million roster bonus.
An outright release would save Los Angeles more than $25 million in cap space against just over $11 million in dead money, according to Over the Cap, thereby allowing the 29-year-old five-time Pro Bowler to sign with whatever team offers him the best context.
True, Bosa has had some injury concerns in recent years but is also coming off one of his healthier seasons in 2024, playing 14 games and recording five sacks with 13 quarterback hits.
Not surprisingly, Nick Bosa and the Niners have popped up as potential suitors for the veteran pass-rusher.
Would 49ers make a run at Joey Bosa if Chargers make him available?
There’s a plausible theory San Francisco could look to trade with the Chargers for Joey Bosa this offseason, although assuming the remaining $25 million in 2025 salary might be a deterrent.
What might be likelier is the 49ers waiting for the edge rusher’s release, thereby allowing them to negotiate their own multi-year deal on their own terms.
Either way, the buzz surrounding Bosa heading to Northern California to join forces with his younger brother continues to grow, and the Niners are expected to invest assets into their defensive line, both on the interior and the outside pass-rush department.
That could potentially lead to a Bosa-Bosa bookend for San Francisco’s defense in 2025.
