Yankees manager gives injury update on polarizing $90 million slugger | Sporting News

The New York Yankees are just around the corner from the start of the regular season, and they have a major question mark in the infield.

With Jazz Chisholm expected to start the spring at second base, the Yankees will have a significant competition taking place at the third base position.

As it currently stands, the competition will include DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza. The favorite appears to be LeMahieu, who has dealt with injuries and a decline in play over the last few seasons.

While it remains to be seen whether LeMahieu will be able to provide stable production, Yankees manager Aaron Boone did provide an update on the veteran’s health.

DJ LeMahieu injury update

LeMahieu played in just 67 games last season, slashing .204/.269/.259 with, two home runs, 26 RBI and a paltry 51 OPS+ before his season ended early due to a hip injury in September.

He missed more time early in the season due to a foot injury, marking the second time in three seasons the former batting champ has dealt with a serious foot injury.

However, Boone said that LeMahieu is healthy entering spring training while giving the veteran some confidence.

“I’m not going to put anything past a healthy DJ LeMahieu and his ability to hit,” Boone told reporters Tuesday. “There’s always going to be the naysayers out there, but really, this is in and around a guy that is a great hitter who’s had some tough, nagging, bad injuries that have cut into that greatness. So there’s no telling what he may be able to do if he’s healthy.”

The Yankees seem content in keeping LeMahieu on the hot corner when he’s healthy, and whether that’s the right call remains to be seen.
