The Chicago Cubs have been one of the most aggressive teams this offseason, adding Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly to reshape their roster. The Cubs are positioning themselves as strong contenders with the open NL Central. However, they might not be done yet. The team remains heavily involved in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes, and signing the two-time All-Star could cement them as the NL Central favorites. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted Bregman would join the heart of the Cubs’ lineup, forming a powerhouse offense alongside Ian Happ, Kyle Tucker, and Seiya Suzuki.
“The Cubs are one of the teams that remain linked to Alex Bregman as his free agency stretches into February. Signing him would block top prospect Matt Shaw, but would also prevent the Cubs from relying on an unproven option in the everyday lineup to begin the year,” Reuter wrote. Adding Bregman would solidify third base and give Chicago a lineup built to contend in 2025. The Cubs still have a significant question mark at third base, with top prospect Matt Shaw not guaranteed to be MLB-ready for Opening Day.
Without Bregman, they would have to rely on Jon Berti or Rule 5 pick Gage Workman, which could leave them vulnerable offensively. Adding Bregman would provide an immediate impact, stabilizing the hot corner and adding another proven bat to the lineup. Beyond his on-field performance, Bregman already has a connection to the Cubs through former Astros teammate Kyle Tucker, who could help recruit him to Wrigley Field.
Reports suggest that Bregman is seeking a short-term, high-salary contract with opt-outs, which aligns well with how teams have approached free agents this late in the offseason. With a strong pitching staff, an improved bullpen, and an already decent offense, Chicago is on the verge of becoming a powerhouse in the Central. If the Cubs secured Bregman, they wouldn’t just be favorites for the division but serious contenders in 2025.
