PFF lists Colts as ‘potential landing spot’ for 49ers free agent safety Talanoa Hufanga

According to PFF, the Indianapolis Colts are a ‘potential free agent landing spot’ for San Francisco 49ers former All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga:

S Talanoa Hufanga, San Francisco 49ers

Overall Free-Agent Rank: 23

Potential Landing Spots: Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts

After seeing limited run the past two seasons due to injury, Hufanga enters the open market mostly playing off the promise he showed in his full season of action back in 2022. That year, he clocked a 78.5 PFF coverage grade in closed coverages.

“ . . . The Colts will be looking at a replacement for Julian Blackmon in the secondary to play in tandem with Nick Cross in new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s defense. In Cincinnati, Anarumo ran a variety of coverages — a nearly identical rate of open and closed coverages — to varying degrees of success. Hufanga is familiar with a variety of coverage looks, having played heavy rates of single-high and two-high looks.”

Originally a 2021 5th round pick of the 49ers out of USC, the 6’0,” 200 pound safety recorded 38 tackles (20 solo) and 2 tackles for loss during 7 starts in 2024—having been activated off injured reserve in early December of this past year after suffering a season-ending torn ACL in Week 11 of the 2023 season.

Coming back late this past season, he earned a career low PFF grade of +57.8, perhaps still working his way fully back from his significant knee injury.

Just 24-years-old, Hufanga is just two years removed from being an NFL First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowler at safety during the 2022 campaign—as he finished with 4 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles amidst that breakout season.

PFF currently projects Hufanga to obtain a 2-year, $25M contract (with $16M guaranteed).

It would be surprising if the Colts do not feature a revamped secondary next season under new veteran defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and in particular, look to upgrade their starting safety position as a top priority—with some new faces brought in.
