Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes is Angling to Get WNBA Expansion Team in Kansas City Read more at: https://www.kansascity.com/sports/article294793959.html#storylink=cpy

On top of being arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes is a businessman. He is currently a co-owner of the KC Royals and Sporting KC, along with being on the ownership board for the NWSL’s KC Current.

Patrick and his wife, Brittany, are part of the ownership that is attempting to bring the WNBA to Kansas City. The WNBA has been expanding and the newest team could find its way to Kansas City. According to Adam Schefter: “As WNBA expansion continues, ownership of the NWSL’s KC Current — which includes Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany — has met with the WNBA and is in contention to bring the league’s next franchise to Kansas City. Mahomes also co-owns the KC Royals and Sporting KC.”

It would make sense for the WNBA to listen to Mahomes, as he is one of the most popular sports figures in the world. Also, as stated, he is co-owner of multiple sports teams. His portfolio speaks for itself. Interestingly, Mahomes’ plans to get an expansion team in Kansas City might also help to quell some of the rumors surrounding the Chiefs. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt indicated that the organization is working with many ideas regarding the failed attempts to get renovations done at Arrowhead Stadium in Jackson County.

One of those measures could be moving the team, which Hunt stated the ownership is discussing. A logical place would be to move the team one state over to Kansas. Despite this being one of the more extreme measures, it could be a possibility. Though Hunt would move the team if all other options failed, he could also find a way to fund the renovations through third-party investors. The renovations were meant to upgrade Arrowhead along with building a new park for the Royals.

There could be another possibility where Hunt and Mahomes can band together to find a way to build a new sports center that includes a ballpark for the Royals and a new stadium where the presumed Kansas City WNBA team could play. This is just speculation, but there is no denying the power of sports in Kansas City.

The Chiefs are also knocking on the door of securing their third Super Bowl victory in a row. There are far more games to be played, but they are looking like the team to beat in the NFL. Should the Chiefs win and Mahomes pitch a new WNBA team, there could be a trifecta of sports sharing the same complex in the future. For more on the Chiefs, head to Newsweek Sports.
