RED SOX CATCHER CONNOR WONG OFFERS UPDATE AFTER BIZARRE IN-GAME INJURY
Boston Red Sox catcher Connor Wong left Wednesday night’s 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies after an unusual play that left fans and teammates concerned.

The incident occurred when Wong moved to catch a pop-up in foul territory. As he stepped back, he appeared to trip on batter Edmundo Sosa, losing his footing and hitting the ground awkwardly.
Relief pitcher Garrett Whitlock stepped in to complete the out with a sliding grab, but Wong did not return for the following inning, replaced by Carlos Narváez behind the plate.
According to MassLive’s Christopher Smith, Wong suffered an ankle injury, though initial imaging reportedly came back negative, offering a measure of reassurance to the team and fans.
After the game, Wong addressed the situation, noting that while his ankle was sore, he had experienced similar injuries before. “It’s a little sore,” Wong said. “I’ve done this one before. Much worse. So everything we did seemed like it was going to be fine. So kind of see how it is in the morning and go from there.”
Wong provided additional context about the play, explaining how the injury occurred. “Kind of just was backing up, trying to get a better angle on it,” he said. “Must have stepped on him and kind of rolled up. It was kind of, ‘Dang, that really hurt.’ And then realized that the ball was still in the air, and then heard the crowd and saw Whitlock out of the corner of my eye and glad he made the catch.”
The Red Sox will monitor Wong’s condition over the next few days to determine whether he can resume regular duties behind the plate.
Boston has additional catching options, including Mickey Gasper, should the team need to fill the gap behind Narváez.
While Wong’s injury appears minor for now, his health will remain a focal point for Red Sox fans and management as they continue the season, ensuring the team maintains stability at the catcher position.

The bizarre nature of the play, with Wong tripping over the batter while still trying to make a defensive play, has made it a memorable moment for those watching Wednesday’s game.
For now, optimism remains high, but careful monitoring will dictate whether Wong can return to action quickly or if the Red Sox need to make short-term adjustments.
