REPORT: Mets Could Potentially Trade For Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Under This Framework

By many indications, the New York Mets are stalling in the Pete Alonso negotiations as a result of trying to trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

According to MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, the Mets are actively trying to put together a package to offer the Toronto Blue Jays. However, Guerrero Jr. is only under contract for the 2025 season before becoming a free agent in 2026.

This complicates the trade package because Guerrero isn’t the average player you acquire the year before he hits free agency. The Mets would trade for him with the understanding he will agree to an extension with him or one may even be finalized as the trade is officially processing.

Here is what a potential trade could look like:

  • New York Mets acquire: 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • Toronto Blue Jays acquire: 1B Mark Vientos, SS/OF Jett Williams (Mets No. 2 prospect), RHP Jonah Tong (Mets No. 10 prospect)

The Blue Jays would start the trade conversations with Vientos. He hit .266 in 2024 with 27 home runs and 71 RBI for the Mets over 111 games. Vientos quickly proved himself as an every day player last season after bouncing between Triple-A and the big leagues in 2022 and 2023.

Bo Bichette is in the mix of trade rumors, so acquiring Williams would provide coverage there. He only played in six games at Triple-A in 2024, so the Blue Jays would need a temporary stopgap until he is ready to take the reins at shortstop.

Tong would provide the organization with a quality arm that would start in Double-A and be ready in about two years.

As for the Mets, Guerrero’s accolades speak for themselves: four All-Star appearances, two Silver Slugger awards and a Gold Glove. He will be just 26 years old when the 2025 season starts, so he would help form a dynamic duo with Juan Soto.

Trading for Guerrero would instantly make the Mets a contender for the next five to seven years.
