Red Sox top prospect provides injury update after shortened 2024 season

Going back a few seasons, the Boston Red Sox have anxiously awaited the arrival of three top prospects to the major leagues.

Kyle Teel was traded to the White Sox to bring in some elite pitching, and Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer remain in the Red Sox organization. Plenty of Sox fans wish to see Anthony crack the Opening Day roster after his outstanding stop in Triple-A last season (.344/.463/.519, .982 OPS), but the same can’t be said of Mayer.

The young shortstop had a breakout 2024 campaign shortened by a lumbar strain. Mayer was promoted to Triple-A alongside Anthony and Teel in mid-August, but the back injury prevented him from playing in Worcester alongside his hopeful future teammates.

The Sox shutting Mayer down early appears to have paid off. In an interview with Sean McAdam of MassLive, the 22-year-old said he’s been “cleared for a while now,” and he’ll be fully ready to go for spring training (subscription required). He even said his swing feels “phenomenal.”

The shortstop slashed .307/.370/.480 with a .850 OPS over 77 games with Double-A Portland in 2024. Unfortunately, Sox fans have been forced to wait to see how he handles the boost to Triple-A, but last year’s stats suggest it could go quite well.

If Mayer posts a successful spring training, he could begin the 2025 campaign in Triple-A and be in the majors before the 2025 season ends. His tenure with the Red Sox organization has been a heavily injured one, and he’s never played more than 91 games in a single season. Mayer needs to find a way to stay healthy long-term if he hopes to stick it in the big leagues.
