When the 2026 MLB season began, one thing we knew about the Boston Red Sox was that there were questions surrounding their offense. Pitching-wise, they figured to be good, but that hasn’t been the case.

As bad as their pitching has been and dealing with injuries, their offense has been a disaster. The numbers reflect that. There are no clear answers in sight. The latest struggles reared their ugly head on Monday night in a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Boston Red Sox Shortstop Trevor Story Doesn’t Mince Words After Loss To Phillies

Boston’s offensive struggles are noticeable. According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, Tuesday night’s loss was the Red Sox’s 11th this season when scoring one run or fewer. That’s not going to win many games. That’s not breaking any news. After Tuesday’s loss, shortstop Trevor Story didn’t mince words on Boston’s offensive struggles.

“It doesn’t feel good right now… all we can do is keep pushing,” said Story on the NESN broadcast.

That is all they can do. However, the offensive struggles just happen to coincide with third baseman Alex Bregman leaving in free agency for the Chicago Cubs. Sure, not all of their struggles can be attributed to that, but it certainly is an area to begin with.

It also doesn’t help that Roman Anthony is struggling and is now on the injured list with a wrist injury. Willson Contreras, after being hit by a pitch over the weekend, is hoping to avoid an injured-list stint.

“We’ve talked about it last year, and pretty much every year,” Story said. “The best teams here play well at home, and we have to find a way to do that and just kind of reverse what we got going. Easier said than done, but we’re putting in the work, and we’re confident that we can do it.”

It is easier said than done, but there is no clear fix in sight. Story is part of the offensive struggles. Mickey Gasper, coming up from Triple-A, has produced in a short period of time. However, over the long haul, can he sustain that? As far as winning at Fenway, again, easier said than done when you score one run or slightly more a night.

Boston Red Sox Offseason Approach Did Not Address Offense

It seemed like Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow put all of his eggs in Bregman’s basket, that he would return. When he didn’t, Breslow’s pivot was to starting pitching, signing left-hander Ranger Suárez from the Phillies. Not exactly the move many were expecting.

Bregman’s replacement was added before spring training in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. Breslow traded for Caleb Durbin, and it has been nothing short of a disaster offensively. He’s slashing .169/.250/.246 with one home run and 14 runs driven in. That’s a far cry from his .256/.334/.387 slash line with the Brewers in 2025. Boston would take those numbers now.

The Red Sox were built on pitching and defense in 2026. That has let them down, and it is compounded even more by the struggles at the plate. Unless they figure things out sooner rather than later, things could get much worse this summer.
