Giants Eye Local Infielder After Surprise DFA

The San Francisco Giants are currently sitting pretty with their infield depth, but let’s face it, over the marathon of a 162-game season, having extra options never hurts. Enter Christian Encarnacion-Strand, a veteran infielder who just might be a perfect fit for the Giants’ roster puzzle. Plus, as a Bay Area native, he would bring a local flair to the team.

Encarnacion-Strand hails from Walnut Creek and grew up in Pleasant Hill, attending College Park High School. He’s carved out a respectable career with the Cincinnati Reds but recently found himself designated for assignment.

So, why should the Giants consider taking a chance on this hometown talent for some infield reinforcement?

This season hasn’t been kind to the 26-year-old. Despite flashes of potential in the majors with the Reds over the past few seasons, he started this year in Triple-A. His performance there-hitting .222/.275/.472-wasn’t enough to secure his spot when the Reds faced a roster squeeze and needed to add a catcher, leading to his release.

Looking back, his rookie season in 2023 was a standout. He posted a .270/.328/.477 slash line with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. However, the following two seasons saw a dip, with a combined .199/.227/.327 line, eight homers, and 35 RBIs in 2024 and 2025.

Now, you might think the Giants are already set at first and third base, Encarnacion-Strand’s primary positions. And you’d be right.

They’ve got Rafael Devers, Jerar Encarnacion, and Casey Schmitt in the mix at first, though none are traditional first basemen. Down in Triple-A, there’s top prospect Bryce Eldridge, fellow Bay Area native Jake Holton, and the red-hot Victor Bericoto.

Third base isn’t lacking either. Matt Chapman is a fixture when healthy, with Schmitt, Christian Koss, and even Devers ready to step in if needed. Triple-A Sacramento offers further depth with Buddy Kennedy, Nate Furman, and Osleivis Basabe.

But here’s the thing about baseball-injuries can strike without warning. Adding a player like Encarnacion-Strand, who has shown glimpses of promise, could be a savvy move.

If he doesn’t pan out, the Giants can simply move on. But if he finds his groove, they might just uncover a gem right in their own backyard.
