The San Francisco 49ers buttressed their secondary on Friday, agreeing to a one-year contract with free agent cornerback Jack Jones following a successful visit to the team facility. The 28-year-old defensive back joins his fourth NFL franchise after previous runs with the New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders, and Miami Dolphins.

Jones is coming off a full 17-game season with Miami in 2025, where he started every game and accumulated 980 defensive snaps. He finished with 77 tackles, including four tackles for loss, along with one interception, six passes defensed, and two forced fumbles. He also led the Dolphins’ cornerbacks in snap share at 91.5%.

Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by New England, Jones has appeared in 59 career games with 38 starts. Over four seasons, he has compiled 213 tackles, eight interceptions, and 33 passes defensed. In fact, his four interception return touchdowns rank second-most in the NFL since his 2022 debut.

Jones showed early promise during his rookie season with the Patriots, recording two interceptions in 13 games. However, his tenure there ended midway through his second season before Las Vegas claimed him. During a seven-game stretch with the Raiders in 2023, he made an immediate impact with two pick-sixes and four pass breakups. In 2024, he started 16 games and contributed three interceptions before being released in the offseason.

Despite his production, Jones’ aggressive coverage style led to inconsistencies, including allowing 10 touchdowns in coverage during one season, according to Pro Football Focus.

With the 49ers, Jones is expected to provide experienced depth behind starting cornerbacks Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green, while fitting into defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ scheme, which prioritizes press-man coverage.
