Green Bay, WI — The Green Bay Packers have made a high-quality addition to their interior defensive line after veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave decided to turn down a lucrative offer from the Chicago Bears worth up to $30 million to reunite with Defensive Coordinator Jonathan Gannon.

League sources say that Hargrave had received a significant offer from the Bears—a team looking to solidify their interior defensive line. However, just about an hour after the Minnesota Vikings ended his contract, Hargrave quickly agreed to join the Packers on a two-year, $23 million deal (with approximately $13 million guaranteed in the first year).
This move came shortly after the Packers appointed Jonathan Gannon as their new Defensive Coordinator. The reunion with Gannon and the opportunity to contribute to a defensive system expected to help the Packers make a deeper playoff run prompted Hargrave to choose Green Bay over the higher salary offered by the Bears.

The two had built a strong relationship when Hargrave played under Gannon at the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2021-2022 season—a period that marked the most successful of his career, with 18.5 sacks and two Pro Bowl selections.
“When you know a coach understands your strengths and puts you in the right position to succeed, that means a lot,” Hargrave shared. “This isn’t just about money. It’s about being in a system I trust with people I believe in. I had my best years under Gannon.”
The Packers believe that Hargrave will be a key addition to their interior defensive line, where he will team up with Devonte Wyatt and provide experience, pass-rush ability, and leadership to a unit that is currently being rebuilt. At the age of 33, Hargrave continues to prove his value, having recorded 52 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and played in all 16 games last season (2025 with the Vikings).
Inside Lambeau Field, the excitement surrounding this deal is quite high. The leadership and coaching staff view Hargrave as a timely addition to enhance the pass-rush from the interior line, support protection for quarterback Jordan Love, and bring stability to the defense.
For the Chicago Bears, this is a disappointing loss, as they hoped Hargrave could immediately upgrade their defense. Instead, Hargrave prioritized familiarity, a system that suits him, and the team culture over the higher salary.
