Miami, FL . May 2026
The Miami Dolphins were left stunned this week after one of their newest rookie signings unexpectedly decided to walk away from football only days after joining the organization.
What initially appeared to be a promising undrafted opportunity quickly became one of the NFL offseason’s most surprising personal decisions.
According to reports, rookie running back Le’Veon Moss informed the Dolphins that he was retiring from football just four days after signing a three-year rookie contract with Miami.

League insiders believe Moss was prepared to walk away from nearly $3 million tied to his rookie contract, future roster opportunities, and long-term NFL earning potential.
The Dolphins officially placed Moss on the reserve/retired list, confirming the young running back’s sudden decision to step away from football, at least for now.
Sources around the league reportedly believe lingering concerns connected to injuries and long-term physical health may have contributed to the unexpected decision.
Moss entered the 2025 college football season viewed as one of the more intriguing running back prospects in the country while playing for Texas A&M Aggies.
Before suffering a serious ankle injury against Florida last October, Moss had already recorded 389 rushing yards and six touchdowns in only five games.
The injury ultimately forced him to miss the final six games of the season and dramatically altered his NFL draft outlook.
Prior to the setback, many evaluators reportedly projected Moss as a third- or fourth-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Although he eventually returned late in the season, Moss rushed for only 15 yards during Texas A&M’s College Football Playoff loss against University of Miami Hurricanes.
Following the injury, Moss’ draft stock reportedly collapsed, leading him to go undrafted before eventually signing with Miami on May 8.
Internally, the Dolphins reportedly viewed Moss as a developmental back capable of competing for depth opportunities during offseason workouts and training camp.
However, only days after arriving in Miami, Moss reportedly decided the long-term physical and mental demands connected to professional football outweighed the opportunity ahead of him.
League observers note that younger players have become increasingly willing to prioritize long-term health and quality of life over NFL contracts and career uncertainty.
While the Dolphins now shift focus toward other young players competing for roster spots, Moss’ sudden retirement has already become one of the most emotional rookie stories of the 2026 offseason.
For many around football, the decision served as another reminder that life after the game now matters more than ever for players entering the NFL.
