Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is expected to be released from the team following a federal investigation linking him to an illegal gambling scheme.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier hasn’t appeared in a game since Oct. 23. Rozier was arrested due to a federal investigation that linked the $96.3 million guard to an illegal gambling scheme.

On Thursday, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported that the Heat are expecting to release the 32-year-old guard in the next few weeks.

League sources believe Terry Rozier will be left off the Miami Heat’s postseason roster.


Understanding Terry Rozier’s Illegal Gambling Case

According to ESPN’s David Purdum, federal prosecutors believe that Terry Rozier told an associate close to him that he would remove himself early from a March 2023 game while a part of the Charlotte Hornets roster. This information would then be sold to sports gamblers, who later wagered more than $200,000 on Rozier’s unders for statistics in the game.

Rozier was arrested in October, along with Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups.

In early 2026, Terry Rozier would plead not guilty to conspiracy charges of wire fraud and money laundering. His attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the case.

On Feb. 2, an arbitrator ruled in favor of Rozier. Under the terms of the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), “players cannot be put on unpaid leave other than in cases of domestic abuse or child abuse,” Purdum wrote.

The guard’s $26.64 million that’s owed to him for the 2025-26 season has been released.

Terry Rozier is currently on the Miami Heat roster. Recent reports believe that this will change, prompting the release of him from the team before the start of the NBA Playoffs.

As for Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups’ separate gambling case, he’s facing money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy charges that carry a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. The head coach’s case could take years to process, ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne reported.


A Timeline of Terry Rozier’s Career

Terry Rozier spent two seasons with the Louisville Cardinals from 2013 to 2015 before getting selected with the No. 16 pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2015 NBA Draft.

The NBA veteran would spend his first four years with the Celtics as a role player. Through 272 games (30 starts) in Boston, Rozier averaged 7.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

He would later sign a three-year, $56.7 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets in 2019 as an unrestricted free agent. Rozier would spend the next four-and-a-half seasons with the Hornets. He inked a four-year, $97 million maximum contract extension in 2021 that keeps him linked with the team through the 2025-26 season.

In 298 games with the Hornets, Rozier averaged 20.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

During the second year of his contract extension, Charlotte traded Terry Rozier and the three years remaining on his deal to the Miami Heat. This is the team he’s played out the rest of the contract with.

Over the two years he played with the Heat, and one that was forced to sit out due to his gambling case, Rozier averaged 12.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists through 95 games (53 starts).

It’s uncertain if Terry Rozier will be able to come back to the NBA in his career. More information on the subject will likely come out down the line.
