SF Giants Fans Ponder Rafael Devers’ Slow Spring Training Performance

As spring training rolls on, it’s natural for fans to keep a keen eye on their favorite players, hoping for a glimpse of the upcoming season’s potential. For SF Giants supporters, the spotlight is on Rafael Devers, the left-handed slugger who has yet to record a hit.

But should this be a cause for concern? In short, not really.

Devers’ primary goal this spring is to stay healthy, and aside from a minor hamstring scare that sidelined him for just over a week, he’s been back in action, getting his swings in. The lack of hits in his 19 plate appearances might raise eyebrows, but context is key.

This is Devers’ first experience in the Cactus League, a stark contrast to the Florida springs he’s accustomed to. Adjusting to Arizona’s dry heat might be a factor.

Despite the slow start, Devers’ focus remains on the future. Questions about his past with the Boston Red Sox persist, but he’s handled them with grace, eager to move beyond the complexities of that trade. The Giants’ acquisition of Devers was part of a larger reshuffle, and while his initial numbers in San Francisco-.236/.347/.460 with 20 home runs and 51 RBIs in 90 games-weren’t earth-shattering, they came amidst significant transitions.

Looking ahead, year two promises smoother sailing. The Giants are banking on Devers to solidify first base, a position where he showed growth last season.

The real test isn’t in Scottsdale’s exhibition games; it’s in the regular season’s grind. A hot spring can sometimes be misleading, with veterans cooling off once the games count.

For now, patience is key. Devers’ track record suggests he’ll find his rhythm. A few spring home runs might ease the nerves of anxious fans, but rest assured, Devers is gearing up for the moments that truly matter.
