Kansas City, MO. The Kansas City Chiefs have continued shaping their roster during the 2026 offseason, focusing not only on adding talent but also ensuring stability at the most important position on the field.
After an offseason filled with roster adjustments and key free-agency decisions, the Chiefs front office has remained focused on protecting the quarterback room behind superstar Patrick Mahomes.
That plan has now taken a major step forward.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach confirmed that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is headed to Kansas City, bringing one of the league’s most experienced signal callers into the organization.
The move comes at an important time for the Chiefs. While Mahomes remains the unquestioned leader of the offense, the team has been looking for a dependable veteran option behind him after losing backup quarterback Gardner Minshew earlier this offseason.
Wilson, a Super Bowl champion and longtime former Seattle Seahawks star, enters Kansas City following a difficult season with the New York Giants in 2025. The veteran quarterback started three games before eventually being replaced by rookie Jaxson Dart, finishing his brief run in New York with an 0–3 record as a starter.
Despite that disappointing stretch, Wilson’s experience and leadership remain valuable assets for any contender looking for depth at quarterback.
Now 37 years old, Wilson brings more than a decade of NFL experience, including multiple Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl victory earlier in his career.
For Kansas City, the signing is less about replacing Mahomes and more about strengthening the depth chart with a quarterback capable of stepping in if needed.
Wilson is expected to compete for the backup role and provide veteran leadership inside the locker room as the Chiefs prepare for another run at a championship.
While Mahomes remains the face of the franchise, adding a player with Wilson’s résumé ensures the Chiefs have one of the most experienced quarterback rooms in the league heading into the 2026 season.
