It’s no secret that the Buffalo Bills have some work to do when it comes to revamping their wide receiver room. For the past two seasons, the Bills have faced heavy criticism that they didn’t have a true No. 1 wideout. Brandon Beane went out and fixed that issue and acquired D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears.

Moore played under Joe Brady from their days in Carolina and now he gets the best quarterback he has had in his career with Josh Allen. Landing Moore is a good solid start, but the revamp has to continue on. While Moore is a solid No. 1 option, the Bills do need another receiver on the outside for Allen, and Falcons’ expert Jason Kandel from Blogging Dirty (covering the Atlanta Falcons) just gave Bills fans a great reason as to why Darnell Mooney could be an intriguing option.

“Darnell Mooney was great for the Falcons in 2024, coming just short of an 1,000-yard season, but was playing through multiple major injuries in 2025. The problem with Mooney is inconsistency, so if a WR-needy team is ready for some high highs and low lows, they will love this roller coaster.” said Kandel.

The Bills are clearly a WR-needy team, and while there are risks, there are also some potential benefits to adding Mooney to this offense and giving Josh Allen a down-the-field weapon.

Darnell Mooney could be big boom-or-bust signing for Bills

Mooney has been a high-end WR3 to a low-end WR2 throughout his career with the Bears and Falcons. He’s only reached over 1,000 yards once in his career but he’s also had to deal with some instability from his quarterbacks that he’s had.

In 2024 with Kirk Cousins and then eventually Michael Penix Jr., Mooney had 992 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was also targeted 106 times in an offense that had Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson. Last season was obviously a different one for Mooney, having dealt with various injuries that limited him to just 443 yards and 1 touchdown.

At just 28 years old, Mooney has value and adding him to Buffalo to pair with Moore, Khalil Shakir, and Dalton Kincaid could really open up the playbook. Even if it’s a short-term deal where it looks more of a prove-it deal, then the Bills would get the chance to capitalize on what Mooney could bring to this offense.
