The San Francisco Giants have made a notable move by signing Harrison Bader to patrol center field, but there’s still room to bolster their depth. One intriguing possibility is adding All-Star outfielder Starling Marte, a move that could enhance their bench strength and provide flexibility in the outfield and designated hitter roles.
Marte, despite being 37 and having battled injuries, still brings a potent bat and invaluable leadership. His experience could be a significant asset, especially for a team like the Giants that could benefit from veteran presence. Last season, Marte primarily served as a DH, but he’s still capable of contributing in the outfield when needed.
Currently, the Giants’ bench outfield options are limited, with Drew Gilbert being the most reliable despite a .598 OPS last year. Marte could offer a solid alternative, stepping in for spot starts in right or left field, or taking on DH duties alongside Rafael Devers and Luis Arráez, who are set at first and second base.
In 98 games last season, Marte posted a respectable .270/.335/.410/.745 slash line, with 14 doubles, nine homers, and 34 RBIs. His ability to give starting outfielders a rest and potentially fill the DH role makes him a valuable target.
Projected to command a one-year, $7.8 million contract, Marte is an affordable option for the Giants. Even if his on-field performance doesn’t fully meet expectations, his veteran savvy and clubhouse influence could be invaluable.
For the Giants, securing Marte could be a strategic move to solidify their roster and add depth as they look to compete this season.
