Texas Rangers Aim to Defy Playoff Odds with Key Strategy Shift

As the Texas Rangers gear up for the 2026 season, there’s no denying they have some challenges ahead. Last season, they boasted the league’s best team ERA and defense, but their hitting left much to be desired. To become legitimate contenders for the AL West or secure a Wild Card spot, they need more than just a boost in offense.

Currently, the Rangers’ playoff odds sit at +115, translating to a 46.5% chance. They’re third in the division, trailing the Seattle Mariners and the Astros, but ahead of the A’s and the Angels. Here are three crucial keys for the Rangers to defy those odds:

Improve Hitting with Runners in Scoring Position

Let’s tackle the obvious first. The Rangers struggled offensively last year, particularly with runners in scoring position (RISP), ranking 26th in MLB with a .234 average.

This stat is crucial-hitting well in these situations can cover up other deficiencies. Corey Seager, Joc Pederson, and Jake Burger need to step up in these moments.

Without improvement here, the Rangers’ playoff hopes will remain dim.

Depend on deGrom and Eovaldi

Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi are the pillars of this team. For the Rangers to stay competitive, both pitchers need to be healthy and effective, aiming for at least 25 starts or 150 innings each.

While the addition of MacKenzie Gore and the progress of Jack Leiter are promising, the team’s success largely hinges on deGrom and Eovaldi. The Rangers will likely be favored when these aces pitch, and the offense must capitalize on the leads they provide.

Establish a Reliable Closer

Last season’s closer situation was a rollercoaster. Luke Jackson’s early success was short-lived, leaving the team scrambling for a consistent finisher.

As spring training unfolds in Arizona, the Rangers need to quickly identify a reliable closer. Robert Garcia, Chris Martin, and Alexis Diaz are in the mix, and it’s crucial for Skip Schumaker and Jordan Tiegs to decide on the best option before the season heats up.

A bullpen by committee won’t cut it if the Rangers hope to compete, especially given their limited offensive firepower.

In summary, the Rangers need to hit better in clutch situations, rely on their star pitchers, and solidify their bullpen to make a serious playoff push. With razor-thin margins, every decision counts in their quest for success this season.
