🚨 WHITE SOX EXPAND POPE HAT GIVEAWAY: Fans Can Now Score The Limited-Edition Hat at Aug. 11 Game! 👇
Chicago, IL – The Chicago White Sox are responding to overwhelming demand with a major expansion of their Pope Hat giveaway. Initially offered as part of a limited-edition ticket package to celebrate Pope Leo XIV — a lifelong White Sox fan — the iconic black and green hats shaped like the pope’s miter will now be available to every fan attending the Aug. 11 game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Originally, these Pope Hats were exclusive to fans who purchased tickets in five designated sections at Rate Field. However, due to an outpouring of interest, the White Sox have decided to open up the giveaway to all attendees on the special theme night.
A Response to Overwhelming Demand
“The fans have spoken, and unlike some of our more limited-quantity promotions, the White Sox Pope Hat is one we believe all fans should have the opportunity to take home,” said Brooks Boyer, White Sox Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer. “We viewed the promotion as a creative way to celebrate one of the franchise’s most popular fans, and by the overwhelming response we received, White Sox fans certainly agreed.”
What’s New for Existing Ticket Holders?
For those fans who already purchased the special theme-night tickets, you won’t miss out. In addition to receiving the exclusive White Sox Pope Hat, they will also get an additional pope-themed item at the game.
Fans can still grab single-game tickets for this iconic night, which are available at whitesox.com/promos.
A Pope with Deep White Sox Roots
Pope Leo XIV’s ties to the Chicago White Sox run deep. Born in Chicago and raised in south suburban Dolton, the pope has always been a passionate fan of the team. He was even spotted in the stands at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, a memorable moment that marked a historic chapter in White Sox history.

Since becoming the pontiff, he has proudly flaunted his White Sox fandom. Last summer, he was seen wearing a White Sox cap at the Vatican, and he made headlines when he sent White Sox legend Paul Konerko an autographed No. 14 jersey.
The pope also showed his playful side, engaging with fans in Rome by shouting “they lost” to a Cubs supporter and giving a thumbs-up to a White Sox fan who yelled “God bless the White Sox!”
Commemorating the Pope at Rate Field
To honor their most famous fan, the White Sox have painted a mural of Pope Leo XIV at Rate Field, located near the section where he sat during the 2005 World Series. The team also hosted a special celebration and Mass last June to honor his papacy.
As the White Sox Pope Hat giveaway grows in size, it’s clear that this promotion is more than just a fun gimmick — it’s a celebration of the deep-rooted connection between the White Sox and Pope Leo XIV.
