Steelers Stun With Cornerback Pick in Miller’s Mock Draft

The NFL Draft is always a hotbed of speculation, and this year, Matt Miller’s mock draft has stirred the pot by suggesting a bold move for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead of following the trend of selecting a quarterback with their 21st pick, Miller proposes they bolster their defense by picking cornerback Avieon Terrell from Clemson.

Miller’s take is intriguing. He acknowledges the quarterback conversation but warns against repeating past mistakes, like the Kenny Pickett selection in 2022, where need overshadowed strategy. This raises the age-old draft debate: should teams prioritize immediate needs or focus on the best available talent?

The Steelers already have a budding star in Joey Porter Jr., but Miller argues they need a strong counterpart. Avieon Terrell, the younger brother of NFL cornerback A.J.

Terrell, fits the bill. Described as a savvy cover man with impressive quickness and athleticism, Terrell could be a game-changer in Pittsburgh’s defense.

His ability to excel in press-man coverage and his knack for disrupting routes make him a tantalizing prospect.

Standing at 5’11” and weighing 180 pounds, Terrell may not have the length some teams covet, but his speed and agility are undeniable. Next Gen Stats gives him a solid 6.43 prospect grade, suggesting he could become a reliable starter within two years.

Lance Zierlein’s analysis highlights Terrell’s strengths in press-man coverage and his versatility, though he notes Terrell might struggle against bigger targets. Despite lacking ideal size, Terrell’s polish and ball skills make him an attractive option for teams needing defensive backfield depth.

Terrell’s college career at Clemson was nothing short of impressive. A two-time All-ACC selection and a 2025 All-American, he racked up 128 tackles, 30 pass breakups, and eight forced fumbles over 39 games. His knack for creating turnovers could be just what the Steelers need to elevate their defense.

The Steelers’ secondary earned a “B-” grade last season, largely due to inconsistencies until they found their rhythm. Adding a player like Terrell could help solidify their backfield and boost their turnover potential.

As the draft approaches, the Steelers must weigh their options carefully. Will they address a pressing need or opt for a long-term investment in a player like Terrell? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the draft drama is just getting started.
