The Astros have made a strategic decision to place Roddery Muñoz, their Rule 5 draft pick, on outright waivers. This move, reported by Chandler Rome of The Athletic, suggests that the Astros might be considering cutting ties with the right-hander.
Should any team decide to claim Muñoz, they would have to adhere to the Rule 5 draft rules, which means keeping him on their major league roster. If he goes unclaimed, Muñoz would be offered back to the Reds, who could then assign him to their minors without the need to place him on their 40-man roster.
Muñoz’s selection in the Rule 5 draft was somewhat unconventional. Typically, players chosen in this draft have spent several years in the minors without making it to the big leagues.
However, Muñoz had already logged significant time in the majors, pitching 93 2/3 innings for the Marlins and Cardinals. Despite this experience, his performance was less than stellar, with a 6.73 ERA during that span.
Over the 2023 to 2025 seasons, he used up all his minor league options.
After the Cardinals placed him on waivers in November, the Reds claimed him, only to non-tender and then re-sign him to a minor league contract. The Astros then picked him up in the Rule 5 draft.
Muñoz showed promise during spring training, striking out 16 batters over ten innings, despite allowing five earned runs. His performance earned him a spot on the Opening Day roster.
However, his struggles continued as he allowed seven earned runs in just four innings at the start of the season, with six strikeouts, six walks, and two wild pitches.
Even if Muñoz had options remaining, the Rule 5 draft rules prevent him from being sent to the minors. It appears the Astros’ patience has worn thin, prompting them to make a move.
While players can be placed on waivers and remain on the active roster, Muñoz’s future with the team is uncertain. He could still be with the Astros tonight, but there’s also a chance he might be designated for assignment to make room for another player.
If another team decides to take a chance on Muñoz by claiming him off waivers, they too must comply with the Rule 5 regulations. Should he clear waivers, he’ll be offered back to the Reds, who could then utilize him as non-roster depth in the minors.
