Dodgers 2026 Free Agents: 7 Players Not Under Contract for World Series Three-Peat

Los Angeles Dodgers Face Tough Decisions Ahead of 2026 as Kyle Tucker Acquisition Looms

The Los Angeles Dodgers are entering a pivotal offseason, and the addition of elite outfielder Kyle Tucker is expected to officially join the team soon. While Tucker’s arrival strengthens one of baseball’s most formidable lineups, it also creates a pressing challenge: finding space on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. With a glut of talent and multiple prospects ready to contribute, the team will have to make some difficult decisions about which players stay and which might be moved or designated for other opportunities.

Doug McKain, host of Dodgers Nation, highlighted four players whose roster spots could be in jeopardy as the Dodgers adjust to make room for Tucker. Each represents a unique case, reflecting not only their performance but also the depth of talent that Los Angeles now commands.

Alex Call: Outfield Depth vs. Opportunity

Alex Call, acquired at the 2025 trade deadline, made a fair number of appearances for the Dodgers last season, but his future with the club is now uncertain. Call appeared in 38 games, logging 73 at-bats and posting a .247/.333/.384 slash line. While respectable, his numbers alone may not secure his spot when the Dodgers evaluate outfield competition.

McKain noted that Call, while talented, faces limitations in terms of role opportunities. “It’s kind of interesting because Alex Call is an outfielder, and the Dodgers need an outfielder, and they traded for Alex Call,” McKain said. “But a lot of players want situations where they can compete for more playing time. Right now, it doesn’t feel like the Dodgers are very interested in giving Alex Call the opportunity to chase a starting role with this team.”

With the arrival of Kyle Tucker, plus prospects like Ryan Ward and recently acquired Michael Siani, Call may become the odd man out. Siani offers elite defensive capabilities, while Ward brings potential as a bat, raising the question of Call’s ceiling and long-term fit on a Dodgers roster aiming for championship contention.

Alex Freeland: Infield Logjam

Another player in the crosshairs is Alex Freeland, who saw limited time at the MLB level last season. Called up in late July, Freeland filled in during a stretch when some of Los Angeles’ key infielders were injured. Over 29 games, he batted .190 with two home runs and a .602 OPS.

Freeland, like Call, faces competition exacerbated by offseason acquisitions. The Dodgers now boast an infield crowded with established stars such as Mookie Betts, Hyeseong Kim, Tommy Edman, Miguel Rojas, and Max Muncy. McKain observed, “Alex Freeland is pretty interesting too…he’s a left-handed bat and a solid glove, but he’s a shortstop. The logjam in the infield became all the more crowded with the additions of Andy Ibanez and Ryan Fitzgerald.” Freeland’s roster spot is precarious, as the Dodgers prioritize depth but must balance development opportunities with immediate competitive needs.

Ben Casparius: Bullpen Bottleneck

Ben Casparius, who spent the bulk of the 2025 season in Los Angeles’ bullpen, faces another challenge: a crowded and high-profile pitching staff. Casparius, who had a 4.64 ERA across 46 appearances while striking out 71 batters in 77.2 innings, showed flashes of promise but now contends with an influx of talent.

McKain noted the bullpen situation is particularly tight: “Edwin Díaz, Tanner Scott, Alex Vesia, Brusdar Graterol, Brock Stewart, Kyle Hurt…what happens with Gavin Stone and River Ryan and Roki Sasaki and guys like that?” Even with solid past performances, Casparius could be first in line for reassignment or other roster maneuvers. For a team intent on maintaining championship-level pitching depth, even competent pitchers are not guaranteed a long-term role.

Dalton Rushing: Catching Competition

Finally, Dalton Rushing, the Dodgers’ young catcher, finds himself in a delicate position. Though he spent his rookie season largely as Will Smith’s backup, Rushing’s limited opportunities and the team’s potential offseason acquisitions could put his role in jeopardy. He batted .204 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 2025, demonstrating promise but also highlighting the need for consistent playing time to develop fully.

McKain added, “Rushing is always an interesting one if the Tarik Skubal deal could possibly go down and he’s included in that. At that point, you have to bring up a backup catcher. Rushing could be impacted, but as a top prospect, he’s likely to draw interest from other teams if the Dodgers decide to open up space.”

The Super-Team Dilemma

What makes these roster decisions particularly complex is the depth of the Dodgers’ current roster. McKain highlighted that, unlike many teams where such players would be considered everyday contributors, Los Angeles’ “super-team” status creates unique challenges. “Anything can happen,” McKain said. “You’re on a team that could go down as one of the best ever in an organization that’s all in on winning multiple World Series titles. Because of that, even good players can be on the chopping block.”

The Dodgers’ front office now faces the delicate balancing act of preserving elite talent, fostering young prospects, and integrating a high-profile addition like Kyle Tucker. With limited 40-man roster spots, every decision carries ramifications for both player development and immediate competitiveness.

Conclusion

The coming weeks will be pivotal for the Dodgers as they finalize the addition of Kyle Tucker and evaluate which players remain part of their championship plans. Alex Call, Alex Freeland, Ben Casparius, and Dalton Rushing all find themselves under scrutiny, not because of a lack of talent, but because the team’s depth and ambition leave no margin for redundancy. For fans, it’s a reminder that even in baseball’s most stacked rosters, tough decisions are a necessary part of sustaining excellence. The Dodgers are poised for another competitive season, but behind the headlines, the roster chess match has already begun.
