The SF Giants have something of a catcher controversy right now between Patrick Bailey and Daniel Susac. Both players are getting starts although many fans think Susac should be getting the lion’s share of the playing time due to his hot bat.
Bailey is still proving that he’s valuable defensively at the position. He made a great play on Saturday against the Washington Nationals and his pitch framing skills are unmatched even with the ABS system.
But at some point, maybe the Giants will decide it’s time to move on from Bailey. For now, the Giants should hold on to both players so they at least have two viable catching options, but if they get closer to the deadline and it’s clear they need another reliever then maybe Bailey could be dealt to another team.
Let’s take a look at three potential teams who may be interested.
3 teams who may trade with the SF Giants for Patrick Bailey
Miami Marlins
Perhaps working with an old friend in Miami Marlins general manager Gabe Kapler could get a deal done. Kapler saw Bailey when he burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2023. That was back when he was impressing on offense and defense before he really started to struggle offensively in the following years.
Right now Miami has two strong offensive catchers in Liam Hicks and Agustin Ramirez. Bailey could give the Marlins an upgrade defensively and allow them to be more flexible by moving Hicks to first base or designated hitter.
Maybe the Giants could get Miami to cough up reliever Tyler Phillips who currently has a 0.75 ERA on the season in exchange for Bailey.
Tampa Bay Rays
Catcher is seen as the one position Tampa Bay really had to upgrade this season. Their current options at the position are not all that strong so Bailey could make sense for them to provide some stability at the position.
Reliever Griffin Jax has had a tough start to the season for the Rays but he’d be a welcome addition in San Francisco’s bullpen.
Kansas City Royals
While Salvador Perez has been the catcher in Kansas City for years, he is struggling this season and the 35-year-old can’t keep going forever.
He was recently given a day off for a mental reset, a move he disagreed with, so maybe the Royals would benefit from having a strong defensive catcher who could help give Perez more rest.
For now, the Giants will hang on to both Bailey and Susac. But if the rookie continues to rake and looks like the catcher of the future, then maybe the Giants can trade Bailey to improve other areas of the roster.
