The San Francisco Giants need to have a huge offseason if they want to chase down the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. The Dodgers have won back-to-back World Series titles and have already improved the roster this winter.
The biggest aspect of the roster that the Giants need to upgrade is the starting pitching rotation. The rotation has a few talented pitchers, but the depth is lacking after they traded a few arms to the Boston Red Sox to land Rafael Devers.

As a result, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicted the Giants would land Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta in a big trade this winter.
“As for where Peralta lands, that’s harder to pin down since the top of the free-agent market hasn’t moved,” Anderson wrote. “He makes sense for practically every contender and his contract is about as budget-friendly as you’re going to find for someone of his service time and track record.
“I’ll throw a dart at the wall and say the Giants. You could sub in any number of other teams, the Yankees and Orioles included, and it would make sense to me too.”
Peralta is the perfect option for the Giants to go after.

He’s on an expiring contract, so he won’t be as expensive to trade for as a controllable starter, but he’s still one of the best starting pitchers in the game. The Giants have the money to sign him to a massive extension, too, in the same way the Red Sox inked Garrett Crochet to a massive new deal after trading for him.
The Giants need to make a big move in the coming weeks. Trading for Peralta makes perfect sense.
