Red Sox Enter Trade Talks for All-Star Yankees Have Been Targeting

The Yankees’ pursuit of Brendan Donovan just got a little more complicated-and a lot more interesting. The Boston Red Sox have reportedly entered the mix for the Cardinals’ versatile infielder, adding a layer of AL East drama to what was already shaping up to be a competitive market.

According to recent reports, Boston isn’t done after acquiring Willson Contreras. They’re still hunting for another impact bat to bolster their infield, and Donovan is firmly on their radar.

But he’s not the only name they’re eyeing. The Red Sox are also said to be looking at Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes, and even high-profile free agents like Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman-who, notably, spent the 2025 season with Boston.

So where does that leave the Yankees?

Well, if the Red Sox are serious about Donovan, it could put pressure on New York to sweeten the pot more than they’d like. Donovan fits the mold of what the Yankees are after-he’s a switch-hitter with defensive flexibility and a contact-heavy approach that could balance out a lineup that’s leaned heavily on power in recent years.

But this isn’t just about adding a useful piece. It’s about keeping that piece away from a division rival.

That’s where things get tricky. If Boston ramps up its pursuit, the Yankees may have to consider parting ways with someone like Jazz Chisholm or Ryan McMahon to make a deal happen-whether directly for Donovan or as part of a separate move to clear the path. Neither option would be painless, but that’s the reality of a competitive trade market.

Now, let’s be clear: Brendan Donovan isn’t the kind of player who singlehandedly defines an offseason. He’s not a franchise-altering superstar, but he is the type of player who can raise a team’s floor and sharpen its edges-especially in October, when every at-bat and defensive play matters just a little more. If he ends up in Boston, that’s a win for the Red Sox and a potential headache for the Yankees.

This is one of those classic front office moments: how much are you willing to pay to improve your roster and keep a key asset out of a rival’s hands? The Yankees have the resources to get Donovan if they truly want him. But if the asking price climbs too high, walking away might be the smarter long-term play.

Either way, the AL East chess match is heating up, and Brendan Donovan is suddenly a very important piece on the board.

Red Sox Linked To Ketel Marte As Trade Talks Hit Unusual Snag

The Red Sox have been active this offseason – at least in terms of conversations – but when it comes to actually landing a major infield piece, they’re still stuck in neutral. Despite being linked to several high-profile names, including Alex Bregman and Ketel Marte, Boston hasn’t made the kind of move that signals a clear direction just yet. And as we close out the calendar year, it’s becoming clear that cost – whether in dollars or prospect capital – could be the biggest obstacle standing in the way.

Let’s start with Ketel Marte. The Diamondbacks second baseman has been one of the most consistent and productive players at his position in recent years.

He brings a switch-hitting bat with pop, a strong glove, and a veteran presence that would immediately stabilize a Red Sox infield that’s been in flux for some time now. Marte isn’t just a short-term fix – he’s the kind of player you can build around.

But as always, talent like that doesn’t come cheap.

Arizona, understandably, is playing this one close to the vest. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Diamondbacks are keeping Marte in their back pocket – but only if they can pull off a major signing of their own.

Heyman noted on his December 29 livestream that Arizona has also been in on Alex Bregman, and if they manage to land him, that could be the green light for a Marte trade. Until then, though, the D-Backs may prefer to keep their All-Star second baseman in the fold.

“If the D-Backs sign Bregman, I think that will be the indication Marte will likely be traded,” Heyman said. “Certainly Boston, Tampa Bay, Seattle at the forefront of those talks.”

So where does that leave the Red Sox? Still in the mix, but not necessarily in the driver’s seat.

Boston has reportedly balked at Arizona’s asking price so far, and it’s easy to see why. The Diamondbacks are believed to be targeting MLB-ready arms like Connelly Early and Payton Tolle – two young pitchers the Sox are high on.

There’s also been chatter about Marcelo Mayer’s name being floated in potential Marte packages, and that’s where things get tricky. Mayer, the former No. 1 prospect in the organization, is viewed as a cornerstone of Boston’s future.

Trading him would be a seismic move – and one the front office seems reluctant to make.

If the Marte path closes, the Red Sox still have options. Bregman remains a top target, and while his market has been quieter than expected, Boston has the financial flexibility to meet his price – if they decide he’s worth it.

That’s a big “if,” especially with other infielders like Bo Bichette, Isaac Paredes, and Brendan Donovan also on the radar. Each of those players offers a different blend of upside and cost, and Boston’s front office is clearly weighing all of it carefully.

The bottom line? The Red Sox know they need to solidify their infield.

They’ve been connected to some of the biggest names available, and they have the resources to make a splash. But with prices high and leverage shifting daily, patience may be their best play – for now.

Whether that patience pays off with Bregman, Marte, or someone else entirely remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: this front office is working the phones.

Now it’s just a matter of when – and how – they decide to strike.
