The Atlanta Braves have found their shortstop for the 2025 MLB season. After trading for utility man Mauricio Dubon from the Houston Astros, many anticipated that he would handle duties up the middle for Atlanta. However, on Monday the Braves agreed to terms with shortstop Ha Seong Kim on a one-year, $20 million deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Kim joined Atlanta after being claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on September 1, 2025, and played the final month of the season with the Braves. His brief stint left a strong enough impression to earn a full-season opportunity.

Limited to just 48 games in 2025 due to a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required surgery, Kim’s year was largely lost to injury. Still, he managed to post a .253 batting average, a .316 on-base percentage and a .684 OPS, with three home runs and 12 RBIs across 24 games in Atlanta.
While his offensive numbers were modest, Kim’s true value lies in his defense. In 2024, he recorded a Fielding Run Value of 4 according to Statcast’s Baseball Savant, showcasing his ability to stabilize the infield. That defensive excellence has been a hallmark of his career since arriving in MLB.
Kim has played five seasons in the majors, all after joining from Korea, where he was a standout with the Kiwoom Heroes in the KBO. He debuted with the San Diego Padres in 2021 and quickly established himself as a versatile defender capable of handling multiple infield positions. His breakout came in 2023, when he won a Gold Glove Award and finished 14th in National League MVP voting, thanks to his elite defense and improved offensive production.
For Atlanta, Kim represents both reliability and upside. If healthy, he provides steady defense at shortstop and enough offensive spark to lengthen the lineup. His presence also allows the Braves to use Dubón in a utility role, maximizing roster flexibility. With Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson and Austin Riley anchoring the offense, Kim’s glove and timely hitting could prove pivotal in helping the Braves push for another postseason run.

Kim’s addition signals Atlanta’s commitment to shoring up its infield with proven talent. If he stays healthy, his defense and steady presence at shortstop could be a difference maker in a division race that often comes down to small margins. For the Braves, Kim represents both stability and upside as they aim for another deep postseason run.
