The Boston Red Sox could soon look to once again do business with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Boston and St. Louis have not only completed two trades that provided significant pitching additions to the former (Sonny Gray was acquired in November, Steven Matz was acquired in July) over the last several months, but recently saw one veteran (Dustin May) elect to leave the former and sign with the latter.

The Athletic’s Katie Woo reported on another potential transaction on Saturday.

The Red Sox are believed to have “significant interest” in first baseman Willson Contreras, and while no deal is close, the connection between the two sides makes them both worth monitoring moving forward. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo initially revealed there was interest, but lumped Contreras in with infielder Brendan Donovan.

Contreras, 33, recently underwent the transition from behind the plate to the other hot corner, where he played 120 games and slashed .257/.344/.447 with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs in 2025. The Red Sox would likely choose to keep him at first base, as adding someone with four consecutive seasons of an OPS+ above 120 would help bring some stability in the place of incumbents Triston Casas, Romy Gonzalez and Nathaniel Lowe.

Contreras is under contract through 2027 — and will be paid $18 million in 2026 and $18.5 million in 2027, while there remains a club option worth $17.5 million for 2028.
