The Los Angeles Dodgers have already signaled that they intend to maintain their aggressive approach this offseason, kicking things off with the high-profile signing of Edwin Díaz. But even that move may just be the beginning. Sources indicate that the Dodgers could be eyeing an even bigger acquisition—one that could reshape their rotation and make them even more formidable in the coming seasons.
ESPN’s Jorge Castillo described a potential trade for Tarik Skubal as “likely,” and the Dodgers are one of the few franchises with the payroll flexibility to meet his expected demands. Acquiring Skubal, however, would not come cheaply. Detroit would almost certainly require a blockbuster package including both established stars and top-tier prospects. The rumors surrounding Skubal have intensified in recent weeks, and according to the New York Post’s Matt Ehalt, the Dodgers appear open to trading Tyler Glasnow, which could clear a path for Skubal.
Glasnow, a 2024 All-Star, has been a key piece for the Dodgers but comes with notable limitations. He has appeared in just 40 games over the past two seasons due to injuries, though he was instrumental in Los Angeles’ World Series run, dominating in October. Despite those contributions, Glasnow’s upside pales in comparison to what Skubal brings to the table.
Skubal’s resume speaks for itself: back-to-back Cy Young Awards, consistent elite strikeout ability, and arguably the best pitcher in baseball at the moment. He is poised to command what could become the largest contract ever awarded to a pitcher—a figure that Detroit has historically been reluctant to match. For the Dodgers, adding Skubal would instantly elevate an already elite rotation, which already features Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Rōki Sasaki, and Blake Snell. The combination of those arms would make Los Angeles extraordinarily difficult to beat, both in the regular season and in the playoffs.
A deal for Skubal would almost certainly require the Dodgers to include additional prospects and MLB-ready players, but Glasnow could serve as the cornerstone of such a package. He provides the Tigers with a controllable, high-upside starter who can slot at the top of their rotation and fill the void left by Skubal. Glasnow signed a five-year, $136 million extension with Los Angeles before the 2024 season, making him a rare piece of long-term stability that Detroit could rely on while building around him.
In short, the Dodgers are in a position to swing for the fences this offseason. They’ve shown a willingness to be aggressive with high-cost acquisitions, and landing Skubal would not only strengthen their rotation but send a clear message: Los Angeles isn’t just aiming to compete—they’re aiming to dominate. Whether that involves moving Glasnow or crafting a larger package, the front office appears ready to make bold moves to maintain the team’s championship window.
