Bo Bichette Now Drawing Interest From Toronto Blue Jays Divisional Rival

In a recent report from The Athletic, longtime Toronto Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette is drawing free agent interest from the Boston Red Sox.

From the report:

Retaining free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman is a priority for the Boston Red Sox. But some with the club view Bo Bichette, previously a division rival with the Toronto Blue Jays, as an intriguing alternative.

The Blue Jays assuredly want to bring Bichette back, but if they are going to lose him, losing him to a division rival is certainly a worst-case scenario.

He’s just 27 years old and one of the best pure hitters in baseball. A two-time All-Star, he’s led the American League in hits twice in his career. He hit .311 this season with 18 homers and 94 RBIs as Toronto got to the World Series for the first time since 1993.

Well, if Boston doesn’t retain Bregman, Bichette could play second base or third base, with Marcelo Mayer occupying the other spot.

Trevor Story will remain the Boston shortstop, and Kristian Campbell appears to be the odd-man out.

Campbell, 23, was already given an eight-year contract, so you’d think the Red Sox would want to play him, but they appear willing to bring in outsiders even at his expense.

There’s still plenty of opportunity for Bichette to return to Toronto, even after they spent big on Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce. Bichette could play second base or shortstop, with Andres Gimenez playing the other position.

As of now, Ernie Clement is slated to play third base and Addison Barger is slated to play right field. However, life becomes a little more complicated if Toronto brings in Kyle Tucker, as they are rumored to be major players for him as well.

He recently visited the team’s spring training facility in Dunedin, Fla.

We could get a resolution to the Bichette issue next week when the baseball world reconvenes for the winter meetings in Orlando, which begin on Sunday.

Last year, we saw Willy Adames (Giants) and Juan Soto (Mets) sign during the winter meetings, while we also saw Garrett Crochet (Red Sox) get traded. So far, reporting has indicated that the winter meetings could be a slow time, but the Blue Jays remain at the head of the class when it comes to aggression, so that fear may not apply to them.

But before we can worry about spending and roster additions, Blue Jays fans will wait and see if Carlos Delgado and Roger Clemens get into the Baseball Hall of Fame. That will also be decided on Sunday night.
