Boston Red Sox interested in Japanese superstar in free agency

The Boston Red Sox are setting their eyes on improving the lineup in 2026. Last offseason, Boston signed Alex Bregman, but he opted out of his contract to enter free agency this year. The Red Sox have since been linked to Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber; however, another name has entered the mix.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox are showing interest in Japanese slugger Kazuma Okamoto in free agency. Okamoto, who was posted for MLB free agency on November 20, has until January 4, 2026, to negotiate a deal with a major league organization.

The 29-year-old third baseman’s biggest strength is his power hitting, which would make Fenway Park very attractive. However, Okamoto projects to be a first baseman instead of a third baseman due to his limited defensive range. First base would represent an easier position for Okamoto.

Okamoto might not have the highest ceiling for MLB, but he would provide a steady floor for Boston. Plus, if the Red Sox were able to complete a deal for the Japanese third baseman, it would allow the team to pursue more batters. Okamoto would be a solid fit, and Boston should look into the possibility.
