Red Sox acquire pitcher in 5-player trade with Pirates

The Boston Red Sox are at it again.

The Sox are building a roster worthy of competing for a World Series title in 2026. On Thursday, Boston acquired pitcher Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates. This comes after a massive Sonny Gray trade last week.

“The Boston Red Sox are acquiring Johan Oviedo, Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman from the Pittsburgh Pirates for Jhostynxon Garcia and Jesus Travieso, according to a source familiar with the deal.”

Oviedo has had a decent career as a starting pitcher. In 67 career starts, Oviedo has a 4.24 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 1.8 K/BB, and has 321 strikeouts in 361.0 innings between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pirates.

Tyler Samaniego is a minor league pitcher with a career 3.82 ERA. Adonys Guzman is a prospect with little experience.

For the Pirates, they land a promising prospect, Jhostynxon Garcia. Garcia was the Sox’s No. 3 prospect on MLB Pipeline. He’s ready to make the leap to the MLB. In his seven career at-bats, Garcia has one double and two walks. The outfielder will get much more of an opportunity with the Pirates, as he fits that ball club’s window much better than with the Red Sox. Jesus Travieso is a minor league pitcher with little experience as well.

The Red Sox are trying to build a solid rotation. They have a ton of depth, especially after this move for Oviedo. It’s still early in the offseason, so the Red Sox will make more trades. With the depth they have at starting pitcher, they could package some of them up for an elite position player, say… Ketel Marte.
