ALLEN PARK— Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown plans on making the decision on whether he’ll play in Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys on gameday.

St. Brown is dealing with an ankle injury that he sustained in the first quarter of last week’s 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Lions coach Campbell initially said the injury had the potential to bother St. Brown for a week or two, but it’s still technically possible that he’s able to make it back for a game that has been deemed a “must-win” by some inside the locker room.
“It hurts, but he’s getting better, so that’s the good news,” St. Brown said. “Just day by day, trying to make sure I’m out there for my guys.”
t. Brown, who did not practice Monday or Tuesday, said the benchmarks he has to hit before making the decision to play involve cutting and changing directions. He won’t be impacted by the stakes of the game, though, saying that’s more of a factor for the coaches and training staff.
“If you’re asking me, no (it doesn’t play a factor). Maybe if you ask coaches or the trainers, they’d have a different answer,” St. Brown said. “Me, I want to play every game. That’s my mindset each and every year. I don’t want to miss any games, to be there for my teammates — your availability is your best ability, so, for me, being out there is the most important thing, whether we’re 0-13 or 13-0, it doesn’t matter. … I gotta be out there.”
Campbell said if St. Brown “can play, he’ll play.”
“He’s better. He’s better. That’s the best way to say it,” Campbell said. “I don’t see him practicing today, but he is better. I know this: If he can play, he’ll play.”
The Lions (7-5) lead the Cowboys (6-5-1) by a half-game in the NFC standings; allowing Dallas to leapfrog them would present yet another massive obstacle to making the playoffs for a third consecutive season.
Campbell has projected the Lions will be shorthanded at receiver with or without St. Brown, saying he doesn’t see wide receiver Kalif Raymond (ankle) playing against Dallas.
More injury updates
CB Terrion Arnold: Campbell said Arnold was placed on injured reserve on Monday with the same shoulder injury that caused him to miss two games earlier this season. The initial prognosis on Arnold’s shoulder injury could be season-ending, but a second opinion revealed that he could continue playing after spending some time on the shelf.
Campbell said the shoulder has continued to bother him since his return.
“It’s been there. It’s not like it went away. It bothered him in this game a little bit, so it just felt like it was something that needed to be done,” Campbell said of the decision to place Arnold on IR.
Arnold has endured several injuries since the start of training camp, including a calf, ankle, groin, concussion, and a season-ending shoulder injury.
Campbell said it “just feels like one of those years.”
“I mean, I wouldn’t say there’s anything out of the norm he did. He got off to a really good start at camp, and then the bug hit him, and then it just kind of was one thing to another,” Campbell said. “But yeah, it’s just one of those years. It’s a tough year for him.”
S Kerby Joseph: Joseph was solemn after returning to the practice field on Monday, saying, “You don’t fix it. Just keep the faith,” when asked about how the knee issue that’s been bothering him all season can be fixed and indicating that offseason surgery wouldn’t help.
Asked how he came out of his first practice back since Week 6, Campbell said he didn’t think Joseph suffered any setbacks. Joseph was spotted going through individual drills with a large brace on his left knee.
“That’s his first time to go out there. He’s been rehabbing, he’s been doing things on the side, but that’s kind of his first — being around it in the individual drills,” Campbell said. “Sometimes you’re always going to hope for a little bit more from the first time you get back on the turf, but that doesn’t mean this is a setback.
“Now, I know you can get frustrated, and I know it can be frustrating when you get hurt, especially when you’ve been trying to work your way back. I mean, he’s been busting his tail to get back. But there again, you just try to treat it, try to eliminate the pain, or limit most of the pain, to where he feels like he can produce.”
Practice report
Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell joined a group of hobbled offensive linemen on the injury report on Tuesday. He was listed as a non-participant because of a shoulder injury, which is a different injury than the one (ankle) that kept him out of practices after Detroit’s win over the Commanders.
Offensive tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder/rest) was also a non-participant after being limited on Monday.
Raymond, Joseph, St. Brown, tight end Brock Wright (neck) and tight end Shane Zylstra (knee) round out the group of non-participants.
The Lions had four players who were listed as limited: Offensive guard Kayode Awosika (foot), defensive back Brian Branch (toe/ankle), center Graham Glasgow (knee) and running back Sione Vaki (thumb).
