The Boston Red Sox’ main goal this offseason is to re-sign their superstar leader, Alex Bregman. However, in the off-chance they lose him to free agency, they need to be thinking of possible replacements.

While many think Pete Alonso could be a replacement, re-signing Bregman and acquiring him are the better options. So, they still need to get another star along with Alonso. Fansided’s Chris Landers believes that the Sox could go out and solve their second base problem while finding a replacement in two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager.

“The Red Sox could simply re-sign Bregman, slot Mayer in at second and use Campbell to plug potential holes at first or even in the outfield. Or, alternatively, they could swing big for Seager, slotting him in at second base and shifting Mayer over to third. That might represent a slight step back defensively, but they’d still be fine, and Seager is undoubtedly a more impactful hitter than Bregman is — and with six years and $186 million left on his deal, he probably won’t be that much more expensive,” Landers wrote.

This past season, Seager slashed .271/.373/.487/.860 with 19 doubles, 21 home runs, and 50 RBI in 102 games played. He has relatively the same numbers as Bregman this season, so he could be a perfect replacement.

The only problem with this is that it would be replacing a righty bat with a lefty. The Sox’ issues with a lefty-dominated lineup have been made clear, so they definitely need to make sure they land a righty with Seager, such as Alonso.

If they can do that, this trade idea seems pretty good. However, if they can re-sign Bregman and get Alonso, they won’t need it. However, it would be smart to keep this in their back pocket.
