Abraham Toro, Romy González and Nathaniel Lowe all saw significant time at first base after Casas’ season ended. Toro is a free agent and Boston may be looking for a more steady option at first base. There is a chance Casas misses the start of the season, in which case the Red Sox will need depth.
Hoskins was once a star with the Philadelphia Phillies, but joined the Brewers following his injury. He hit 38 home runs in 121 games for the Brewers. However, last season he lost his job to Andrew Vaughn after a thumb injury sidelined him.
Hoskins was still praised as a leader for the Brewers despite losing his starting job after his injury. His first season with the Brewers was not great, but he still managed to hit 26 homers. However, last year, he showed flashes of his former self.

Through 55 games, he was slashing .276/.374/.475 with nine home runs. If Casas misses time, Hoskins could serve as a reliable replacement. That would allow González to be used at second or third base more often, if needed.
Hoskins may also end up being a cheaper first base option. He could sign on a cheaper deal, looking to re-establish himself. The Red Sox likely still believe in Casas, given the flashes he has shown in his young career. However, Hoskins would be an inexpensive backup plan if Casas’ recovery takes longer than expected or if he struggles early on.
