Dante Barnett played one year of college football at the Division III after spending time at the NFL Academy.
Earlier today, it was revealed that the Green Bay Packers had signed cornerback Tyron Herring to the practice squad, based on him being spotted by the media at the Packers’ Wednesday practice.
What we now know, though, is that Green Bay actually signed two practice squadders today, as the team announced that the Packers had also signed defensive lineman Dante Barnett.
Barnett began playing football for the NFL Academy, the league’s international prep development wing.
For example, this year’s team traveled to Bradenton to play IMG Academy, a top prep program, and also hosted St. Thomas Aquinas, another top prep program.
The NFL Academy lost 41-24 to IMG, but nearly beat St. Thomas Aquinas in a 41-38 game.
The Englishman drew interest from major college programs as a recruit, but failed to post the grades that would warrant a scholarship.
He still went stateside for college, enrolling at Dickson College, a Division III program, but left after a year due to the cost of attendance. Division III is non-scholarship football.
Once he was three years removed from his high school graduation class, the stipulation that the NFL makes to determine whether someone is draft eligible or not, Barnett reemerged as an International Player Pathway (IPP) prospect.
The league’s IPP rules allow for each team to roster one international player, who played no more than two years of prep football in the state, to be added to teams’ practice squads as a roster exemption that doesn’t take up 1 of the team’s 16 traditional practice squad spots.
Barnett is now the Packers’ fourth IPP player, following defensive end Kenneth Odumegwu (Nigeria), kicker Alex Hale (Australia) and kicker Mark McNamee (Ireland).
Per Dane Brugler of The Athletic, Barnett ran a 4.69-second 40-yard dash at 6’1” and 275 pounds at the IPP pro day at USF’s campus.
He was 1 of 13 players who were members of the league’s 2025 IPP class. Originally, he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals post-draft, but was waived by the team back in July. He had a workout with the Denver Broncos on September 19th, but wasn’t signed by the team.
Barnett actually worked out with the Packers on Tuesday, along with fellow international prospect Laekin Vakalahi. Visa issues can be a thing with IPP players, though, so it’s uncertain whether or not Barnett is actually in Green Bay still. Remember, it took weeks for McNamee’s visa situation to be resolved before he was able to join the Packers’ roster during training camp.
Barnett is generally listed as a defensive tackle on most publications, but he’s very undersized at the position right now. According to Dickinson’s website, he played in five games, made seven tackles, recorded a sack and a tackle for loss in his lone season of college football. There, he was listed as a 6’3”, 280-pound defensive tackle. He will wear David Bakhtiari’s #69 with the Packers.
