November brings plenty of MLB roster deadlines, including another one at the end of this week. By 8 p.m. ET on Friday night, teams must decide whether to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players (or let them become free agents).

In many cases, this deadline leads to tough decisions from clubs who might be looking to shed salary by cutting some underperforming players or clear roster spots. In previous years, the Red Sox have been faced with some of these tough calls. This year, though, expect the deadline to pass with little in the way of substantial Red Sox news.

The Red Sox have just three arbitration-eligible players and they’re all big parts of the team’s future (or at least, trade chips): starters Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford and outfielder Jarren Duran. All three of those players are arbitration-eligible for the first time, meaning they’re all about to get significant raises from their pre-arbitration salaries. Of course, there’s no way the Red Sox would even considering non-tendering any of those three players.

Boston will tender contracts to all three players and then negotiate their salaries for 2025. MLBTradeRumors projects that Duran will earn $4.9 million, Houck will earn $4.5 million and Crawford will earn $3.5 million next year. The sides have until January 9 to exchange figures and if there’s no agreement, an arbitration hearing is the next step. All three players are considered candidates for long-term extensions though it’s unclear if any of them have made progress on signing such a deal. Houck is a free agent after 2027 and has three years of arbitration; both Crawford and Duran are considered Super Two players who accumulated enough service time to have four arbitration years. Barring an extension, they’ll both hit free agency after 2028.

If the Red Sox make any moves Friday, it’ll be because they non-tender a pre-arbitration player making close to the major league minimum in an effort to clear roster space (their 40-man roster is full). Boston did this with injured reliever Wyatt Mills a year ago and then re-signed him to a two-year minor league contract. This time around, end-of-roster players like Bailey Horn, Chase Shugart and Mickey Gasper.

The deadline will be a more meaningful one for other teams who have more difficult decisions to make. Notable non-tender candidates include Colorado’s Brendan Rodgers, the Yankees’ Trent Grisham, San Francisco’s Mike Yastrzemski, Milwaukee’s Aaron Civale, Los Angeles’ Dustin May, Cleveland’s Triston McKenzie, Toronto’s Alek Manoah, Pittsburgh’s David Bednar, San Francisco’s Camilo Doval and Toronto’s Jordan Romano.
